Compost tea is a liquid extract made from composted
organic matter that can be used as an organic, liquid fertilizer. Many
compost teas also can have anti fungal, anti bacterial, anti-insect
activity and may contain naturally occurring plant growth regulators,
vitamins and sugars to stimulate plant development.
How Is Compost Tea Made and Used?
Compost tea is a living extract. It is brewed, similar to beer, but
must be used fresh, just after the brewing to insure the optimum
response in plants. Generally, a 25 gal batch is brewed over night at 80
F with vigorous aeration. The brew contains several pounds of high
quality compost, with a low salt index and a balanced mixture of
beneficial micro organisms plus humic acids and a complex carbon and
protein source to stimulate the growth of the micro organisms in the
brew. The brew should be used within 24 hrs after it’s been made and
should be kept at the 80F temperature until it is used. |
