Biological Control of Mosquitoes
Maricopa County and the cities surrounding Phoenix, Arizona have some of the highest rates of West Nile virus in the United States. This dangerous virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and many cities in the county are embarking on a drastic treatment program involving chemical sprays and fogging in our neighborhoods. West Nile is toxic to both humans and horses. Horses are particularly susceptible to the virus because they spend their lives outdoors and are more prone to get bitten by mosquitoes. Unfortunately, many of our city leaders are unaware of a very effective, safe biological control method that involves a organic alternative. This is a bacteria known as BTi (Bacillus thurengensis 'Israelensis') that kills the larval, immature stage of the insect during its early breeding stage. The treatment is extremely simple, safe and inexpensive. It is also long lasting. Just treat the standing water where mosquitoes breed by simply throwing in some pellets of the bacteria coated on corn granules or with "dunks" which are small, donut-shaped blocks that contain the BTi. The bacterial spores are released into the water and begin multiplying where the mosquito larvae, or "wigglers" grow. The wigglers ingest the bacteria, causing them to die within several hours. If you have an abandoned pool in your neighborhood or stagnant birdbath simply throw in a few dunks and that's it. For larger ponds or flood irrigated fields you can opt to use the granular form of BTi known as AquaBac which is broadcast over the surface water where it does its magic. The treatment is good for up to one month and is recommended for use in the hot summer months when mosquito breeding is greatest. Artistic Arborist Inc, sells both the granular AquaBac and the dunks for use by homeowners, farmers, city managers and golf course and park superintendents.
