Why Use an Air Knife?

Andrew Backhaus, Ph.D.

The air knife is an incredibly useful device for soil excavations around tree roots. This tool uses a high pressure air jet to blow soil away from roots without damaging them. We use the air knife extensively to loosen compacted soil around tree roots, to do non-destructive root zone inspections, to cut thin trenches for vertical mulching and to perform soil excavations in soil where electric wires or irrigation lines exist. We also use a modified knife to inject large blasts of air in heavily compacted soils to get soil fracturing to improve percolation rates.

The air knife is a wonderful tool that many arborists are unaware of and few have in their arsenal. If you are interested in purchasing one, please contact us for more information of a demo.
